Sustainability

In 2019, Veja started to launch its first ecological shoes. Veja knows that the surplus of plastic ending up in the ocean can be remedied. The 'Condor' model was born as the first running shoe made of petroleum. This new trainer was produced with recycled plastic and biobased materials. This trainer was technologically improved for the runners, but the materials were preserved. In 2020, this model was even chosen as Product of the Year in the 'Running' category.

Footwear materials

The upper is made of recycled plastic bottles. In addition, the soles are made from Amazon rubber (an essential Amazon raw material for Veja) and various innovative materials, such as recycled plastic bottles. This rubber is purchased directly from the rubber collectors in the Amazon: the Amazon syringe cooperatives. Veja also buys rubber from Peruvian producers. Thanks to the use of Amazon rubber, the Amazon rainforest is preserved and improved. The leather used in Veja's shoes comes from Uruguay and the colouring process is completed there using plant extracts. They do not use chrome or other heavy metals in this process.

CO-2 emissions and transparency

Veja has conducted an extensive CO-2 study to gain insight into its entire emissions from the production and sale of its shoes. In this extensive study, the focus is on quality and all aspects are included: both direct and indirect emissions. A remarkable point from this research was that the emissions are mainly, when looking at the raw materials, related to the production of leather. This is 4 times more than the production of, for example, the textiles and cotton used by Veja. On the other hand, the leather industry can also be seen as a place where the cow is recycled, because the cattle are mainly used for the meat industry. This also gives Veja the opportunity to produce leather shoes. In addition, the cultivation, collection and processing of Veja's cotton and rubber from the Amazon only accounts for 1% of the raw material emissions. This is considerably less than the leather and is therefore a very ecological material.

Veja is very transparent in its policy and work. Veja is continuously working on being as "green" as possible and is busy with innovation and renewal. By purchasing rubber from the Amazon, the economic value of the forest is strengthened and the work of the families is appreciated. In this way, Veja contributes to the fight against deforestation and pays a higher price for it than for raising cattle. Storage and the delivery process are also taken care of by the association Ateliers Sans Frontières (Atelier Zonder Grenzen). This association supports young people in their social integration by offering them work.

Veja's raw materials are all ecological and purchased according to fair trade principles. The factories of Veja also have high standards. Because of these important points, Veja has chosen to eliminate advertising for the brand, making its prices comparable to those of competing companies. This is because the brand does not rely on advertising, but on collective intelligence.
