Seiko

The story of Seiko began in 1881, when a 21-year-old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop in downtown Tokyo where he repaired and sold watches and clocks. Today, after more than 130 years of innovation, Kintaro Hattori's company is still dedicated to the perfection that its founder always strived for.

Collection of watches

More than 100 years ago, Seiko produced Japan's first wristwatch, laying the foundation for a now long tradition of great craftsmanship. To this day, Seiko watchmakers share a passion for innovation and craftsmanship in the creation, assembly and inspection of Seiko mechanical watches. Outstanding craftsmanship is the basis for the high standard of Seiko's mechanical Presage watches.

The Seiko Prospex collection includes watches for every sporting challenge. After making the first diver's watch in 1965, Seiko has succeeded time and again in meeting the high expectations of sports and professional divers. Prospex distinguishes three segments. SEA, with a broad Seiko Diver's collection. SKY, an adventurous pilot's watch collection and LAND, watches equipped with a rotating compass ring. Prospex is the ideal collection for the adventurer.

The Astron watch that always shows the right time. Around the world. At the push of a button and using only light-generated energy, an Astron GPS Solar watch can contact 4 or more satellites, identify the time zone and set the hands above the dial to the correct local time. With a maximum deviation of 1 second per 100,000 years. The ideal watch for the frequent traveller.

Seiko history

In 1881 Kintaro Jattori opened a shop in Ginza, Tokyo where watches and clocks were repaired and sold. Only eleven years later, in 1892, he established the "Seikosha" factory. Kintaro bought a factory in Tokyo, which he aptly named Seiko-sha (the house of precision). It was here that Kintaro Hattori produced his first clocks and this marked the beginning of a company that would become one of the world's finest watch manufacturers. During the 1890s, the success of Seikosha wall clocks grew and Kintaro wanted to expand his company's range. In 1895 he designed a pocket watch, the Timekeeper. It was a crucial step forward, otherwise Seiko's future would have been completely different, as it paved the way for Japan's very first wristwatch.

At the beginning of the Taisho era, pocket watches were still very popular and only a few wristwatches were imported into Japan. However, Kintaro was determined to "stay one step ahead" and set about the arduous task of creating the first wristwatch. In 1913, he succeeded and the Laurel was produced. In the beginning, the company could produce around 30 to 50 watches a day, and for the first time Kintaro was ahead of the rest. In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake shook the city, completely destroying Seikosha's offices and factories. A new start had to be made. Shortly after the earthquake, the company developed an entirely new watch, which was launched in December 1924. In 1960 the first Grand Seiko model was produced. High in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture in central Japan. A small team of Seiko's most experienced and skilled watchmakers were entrusted with the task of making the very best watch they could. With the introduction of Grand Seiko, Seiko marks the pursuit of the "ideal watch" to deliver more accuracy, legibility and durability than any other. And sets the standard for excellence in the process.

Seiko is one of the few watch manufacturers in the world that is able to manufacture all movement technologies in house. The name Seiko is derived from the Japanese "Seikosha" which literally means "House of Precision". Since 1881, Seiko has been a leader in innovative watches.
