JanSport

JanSport

In 1967, there were three friends living in Washington: Skip, an outdoor enthusiast; Murray, an engineer; and Jan, an experienced seamstress. At the time, Murray won a design award from the Alcoa Company for creating the first adjustable aluminium frame for backpacks. After this, Murray asked his friend Jan to create a backpack pattern for his new aluminium frame. If it was successful, he would name the company after her. Murray, Skip and Jan joined forces and it was indeed a success. Thus, the name JanSport was born!

Mount Rainier

Mount Rainier was a source of inspiration for Skip, Jan and Murray. It was their headquarters for adventure, where campsites blew away in the wind, where nights were spent in snow caves and where an amazing sunrise was the reward for those who made it to the top. In 1972, Skip, Jan and Murray invited their friends to what is now known as the longest consecutive group climb on Mount Rainier. This is also an annual JanSport event. The mountain continues to be a place for the brand to test and explore their products and themselves, but also to share the outdoors with friends.

JanSport SuperBreak

One day, some students at the University of Washington discovered JanSport's hiking backpacks and began using them to keep their books dry in the rain. Then and there the campus backpack was born, which later became known as the SuperBreak. Since then, the brand has designed backpacks, bags and outdoor equipment for great adventures and everyday activities. At JanSport, they strive to create durable, functional and versatile products that you can count on, whether you're facing a long day, hanging out with friends or just getting lost in nature.

Sustainability

In 1967, JanSport was founded to help adventurers experience and celebrate the outdoors. In the years since, that mission has expanded to protecting and preserving the outdoors for future generations to enjoy. Today, at JanSport, they take a critical look at the carbon footprint and sustainability of everything we do. They are still working on it, but this season they have used recycled plastic, which is the equivalent of about 13,000,000 450ml plastic water bottles, for their best-selling packaging.
