Kihachiro Onitsuka aspired to start a company that would contribute to the development of youth and society through sport, and with this in mind founded ASICS in 1949. After returning home from the war in 1945, Kihachiro Onitsuka founded ONITSUKA Shokai in Japan in 1949, which later became ASICS. ASICS is an acronym for the Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano" ("You must pray for a healthy mind in a healthy body"). Onitsuka first heard the phrase when a friend gave him business advice during wartime. That friend was Kohei Hori, director of Health and Physical Education at the Hyogo Prefecture Board of Education. The words made a deep impression on Onitsuka and inspired him to create shoes that encourage young people to move.

ASICS Institute of Sport Science (ISS) conducts a wide range of research, analysing human forms and movements. Additional research and development programmes are undertaken to support production processing technology, products and materials. Human Attribute Research Institute

The Human Attribute Research Institute analyses the changes in shape and load of the body during movement. This differs per sport and gender. The results of these analyses are used to develop the functions of ASICS products. The research laboratory contributes to the design of new materials used in ASICS shoes, in order to develop even better shoes. Based on the results of the Human Attribute Research Institute, calculations are made to determine what best suits the human body. Through computer simulation, the researchers are able to collect data and evaluate the body's reactions. The Institute carries out research to establish basic values and new evaluation methods. This allows the quality of the products and materials used to be maintained and improved. It also provides technical guidance to production plants, so that the developed materials can be efficiently mass-produced without compromising on quality.
