The brand was founded by the then 24-year-old Dutch entrepreneur Laurent Hompes. The brand initially focused on the Dutch market as a wholesale business for menswear, with a collection that consisted mainly of affordable sports jackets in bright colours.

The premium denim collection runs through all the Scotch & Soda collections. The name of this is 'Amsterdam Blue'. This collection returns every season with unexpected washes, prints and fabrics, such as Japanese selvedge, organic cotton and raw denim. In the year 2000, the brand was bought by the three men Erik Bijlsma, Joep Krouwels and Patrick Munsters and a year later they relaunched the brand. In 2008, retail sales started with the opening of two shops in Amsterdam and Utrecht. The brand now sells its collections in 225 free-standing shops and 7,000 doors in some of the world's biggest cities, including Paris, London and New York. Scotch & Soda delivers its products to more than 70 countries worldwide.
