Clarks Originals

Clarks Originals, based in Somerset, England, has been a pioneer in shoemaking since 1825, when founders James and Cyrus created their first profile with a radical combination of innovation and craftsmanship - a combination that remains at the heart of everything they do.

Clarks is proud of their approach. They're commited to creating a lighter footprint through the use of responsible materials. They will eliminate the unnecessary through considered craftmanship. Their community is what make them; they're giving back to their community.

Clarks purchases leather responsibly. Beautifully durable, breathable and natural. Approximately 90% of all leather they use is Leather Working Group Medal Rated. This means that it comes from leather tanners that have achieved the leading environmental standards. Many of their tanneries use renewable energy, recycle and reduce water consumption. They use isa 'smooth' leather in many of their styles. For each pair of these made shoes it is 8.69 US gallons of water and 288.1 hours of light are saved in manufacturing.

The soles of the Clarks shoes are crepe soles; fully responsible content. Of course it's the best, but durable is better. They want their natural crepe rubber soles to protect and preserve forests. Their goal is to buy 100% sustainable crepe soles. Clarks' packaging is made from recycled FCS material.

The Clarks Collection

Often imitated, never surpassed. Now, as always, their icons remain true to their profession, their heritage and their sources of inspiration. Their distinctive silhouettes distinguish them. This also applies to details and construction techniques that combine craftsmanship and innovation in equal measure.

The world's very first dressed leisure shoe, the Desert Boot remains as recognizable today as it was in 1950 for a very simple reason: every detail is the same. The inspiration for Nathan Clark's ground breaking creation came from a seemingly improbable source: a raw suede boot from Cairo's old bazaar, popular with off-duty army officers. After making initial sketches and even a prototype of a newspaper while sitting in a tailor's seat on a tent floor in Burma, Clark constructed a monster on his return home in Glasonbury - a monster that would later become the shoe we all know and love today.

When the original desert boot was first made by Nathan Clark in 1950, they said: 'It'll never sell'. In the past 70 years it has become an icon. Often copied, but Clarks has never been surpassed.
